Throwing out the room design rulebook

At one time, bathroom and kitchen tiles were all about function. They protected the walls around fixtures and worktops, basically in places where there was likely to be considerable moisture.

That time has long passed. Tiles are now a way of creating statement walls and floors. We are not simply talking about interspersing tiles with a graphic on or with plain coloured ones either. Interior designers and homeowners are now letting loose, creating innovative patterns and effects on walls, floors and all other aspects of rooms. It’s all part of a trend for quirky, characterful and highly individual homes.

Colour creativity

Gone are the days when colour schemes and patterns were uniform and complementary. Now, anything goes. The same room can contain an eclectic mix of colours, textures and finishes. Being bold and filling a room with character can include picking colours that appear to clash or are polar opposites.

Tiles can reflect this colour creativity. Using vibrant colours for tiles also draws attention to particular features and fixtures. So for example, a splash of colour can be added to your bath, using particular colours of bathroom wall tiles. Or, your family dining area can be highlighted using contrasting kitchen floor tiles.

Size no longer matters

Varying sizes can also add to the character of the room and the wow-factor. This could be diversifying the heights and footprint of items in the room. In tiling terms, it could mean creating flooring and splashbacks using different sizes of floor tiles or wall tiles, like an eye-catching jigsaw.

Mismatch magic

Another aspect of the more avant-garde style of interior design is to mix and match both eras and themes. You could end up with a woven together mix of contemporary and traditional pieces of furniture and decor for example. Or Arabic, Mediterranean and monotone influences all in one room, or contained in “pockets” of inspiration and style.

Some homeowners create tile effects that vary in the same room, as part of this “zoning” or to build clashing but fascinating effects. So your kitchen wall tiles could be particularly creative around food prep areas. Or your bathroom floor tiles could be quirky and fun where you shave or do your makeup.

Tiles to tie room designs together

The opposite of the above is when bathroom or kitchen tiles are placed to hold designs together and build the appeal of the room. For example, using a patterned floor tile that matches the pattern on your work surfaces and walls. This makes the whole room into one incredible “canvas”, reflecting your vision of colour and shape.

Or, you could have a stripped back, crisp and simple room décor, with a splash of movement and colour from mosaic tiles for extraordinary contrast.
