Natural floor tiles

These are an obvious choice for period houses, but the materials used in these natural tiles – such as limestone, slate and highly polished granite – look beautiful in modern and contemporary interior schemes too. Yes, they tend to be amongst the most expensive on offer, but they will certainly last the test of time, provide a stunning visual and last for years to come. Even better, their natural appearance only becomes more attractive with time. Try oversize limestone tiles or dark slate in busier areas as they don’t need as much cleaning. Glossy stone gives an on-trend finish that is luxurious, fun and glamorous.

Porcelain and ceramic tiles

These are a popular alternative to natural tiles, and they are light, robust and also simple to lay. They also tend to be more affordable which makes them popular for smaller budgets or expansive areas. For a hotel chic look, opt for oversize versions which create that sense of boutique luxury. If you prefer your furniture and accessories to do the talking, try minimally designed porcelain that is texture free and finished in a cool neutral shade. Matching floor and wall tiles look great in a wet room and textured grey is very popular at the moment with hallways and kitchens.

Vintage

Reproduction vintage floor tiles are a great choice if you want the look of original, without the risk of damage. Look for classic finishes and designs which hark back to your favourite era as these will help to provide real character for your home. Reclaimed brick tiles are very popular, as are chic monochromes. You can also get richly patterned lines which are perfect for their matching period home, such as Victorian or Edwardian. Alternatively, look out for themed tiles such as Moroccan which can provide vintage chic with a design-led aesthetic for a very stylish finish.
