Choose The Perfect Living Room Colour Scheme

A little colour in life reflects your personality and lifts your mood, so why not create a living room that at least has a little colour?

While it’s true that neutral room schemes provide you with a blank canvas, there’s a lot to be said for introducing colour (which can be done in more ways than one). Different shades can have an uplifting or calming effect and your choice of colour and furnishings can go a long way to reflecting your personality.

Colours seen in nature such as the browns, greys and reds in our wood-effect and brick-effect tiles have a calming effect on us. As these are fairly neutral colours they give you various opportunities to experiment with brighter or bolder shades on the walls, such as sky blue and restful leaf green. Red is also a very stimulating shade and yellow is uplifting (I mean yellow? Need we say more?)

The key to decorating with one colour on the wall and another on the floor is to use different shades of the same colour together. This doesn’t have to be though, as you can also use the same shade on both the wall and floor for a more cocooning feel. It’s also a good idea to mix textures, for example combining matt paint on walls with a sleek glossy lamp base. Try and work your colour scheme into all areas of your living room – such as your bay windows.

Want to create a dramatic, modern look? If you’re painting your walls, go for a dark midnight blue for a moody backdrop. When it comes to choosing your furniture opt for rich shades such as a hot pink sofa for an opulent look. And then the tiles, obviously! Go for a gentle shade such as grey – as this will help the furniture stand out and not draw to much attention away from that beautiful midnight blue wall.

Combine pattern with blocks of colours, why not go for gorgeous teal patterned wallpaper along with wood-effect or stone-effect floor tiles? Also consider the furniture, add a modern, low-level sofa in a deep coral shade. Contemporary rug designs are another way to add vibrancy to your interior, think about those rugs with bright geometric patterns – perfect.

Pastel shades can work equally well for a touch of colour, go for powder blue, pink or lilac and add interest with striped or floral accessories. If you have a small living room, keep colours and shades light to make the room feel as big as possible.

Polished porcelain tiles in timeless shades are also a great option if your living room is small. As they will make the space appear bigger and allow light to bounce of their surface. By choosing neutral shades you can go crazy with furniture and accessories. Consider a glass coffee table, as this can also help lighten up a room without feeling like your losing space.
